MATCH REPORTS Jul - Dec 2017

National Team Championships - Kent

Above: the EJC members who fought today, minus Mounir who had to rush away to another engagement.

What an absolutely excellent day! The team spirit among our London comrades was quite incredible, with debutants and Olympians shoulder to shoulder, supporting each other at this always intense event. The Southern Area, headed up by Nicky Sexton, did a fantastic job running the event, with some very special touches that made it a truly athlete-centred occasion.

Francesca competed in the Pre-Cadet girls team and they stepped up 2 players down, leaving the uphill climb almost impossible. She and her team-mates gave it their best shot, but no medal this year.

30th August - World Championships, Budapest, Hungary

Above: Nekoda throwing for ippon in the bronze medal contest, against Panama's Miriam Roper

Nekoda had an incredible day in Budapest, securing a lifetime best result by winning GBR's first world medal for 7 years. Nekoda beat Russia's Zabludina in the first round and Klimkait of Canada in the second. In the quarter final a loss against Receveaux of France put Nekoda into the repecharge, where she despatched Lien of Taipei with a decisive manner. The bronze medal match, against the former world number one, was fast and brutal with Nekoda racking up the scores until she threw for ippon with an immense ouchi-gari to take the medal.

It was a brilliant performance, an impressive achievement and with Jo and Charlotte there to support, it felt extra special.
